Formed as the 5th Light Division on 15 February 1940 at La Neuville-au-Pont, the division became the 5th Light Cavalry Division from 3rd of March. It was part of the French Second Army commanded by Général Charles Huntziger in May 1940. The division was commanded by Général de Division Jacques Chanoine.

Created in february 1940 to participate in the delay of the German breakthrough the Ardennes. This takes place between the 10th and 12th of May, without slowing down the Germans enough. The division then opposed the sedan breakthrough. On the 26th of May, although greatly diminished, it participates in the offensive against the Abbeville bridgehead.

After being placed in reserve, the division resumed the fight after the breakthrough of the weygand line, finding itself trapped and destroyed in the pocket of Saint-Valery-en-Caux.
