History

The Training Division Division was a crack division of the Chinese National Revolutionary Army and part of the Chinese troops trained by the Germans.

It participate in the Battle of Shanghai as part of the 9th Group Army under the command of Zhu Shaoliang, would later retreat with the remains of the battered units towards Nanking to be refitted after heavy loses

On December 6 the Japanese would attack Chinese positions 14 miles east of Nanjing, there the division would mount a defense on the Purple Mountai as it resisted attacks from the Japanese 16th Division, after their positions were compromise they were force to retreat.

In the dawn of December 9, Japanese soldiers from the 36th Infantry Regiment engaged a battalion of the elite Training Division outside the Nanjing city wall near the Guanghua gate (Gate of Enlightenment). The Chinese withdrew into the wall after half had become casualties. When the Japanese attempted to follow, the Chinese exposed their positions with electrical lights and attacked with small-arms fire, forcing the Japanese back.
