History
Formed in 1944, the Vannay Battalion was a Hungarian commando unit meant to defend Budapest from the advancing Soviet forces.
The batallion was made up of volunteers and played a significant role during the citys defense, enduring superior Soviet attacks during tough winter conditions for seven weeks, eventually taking positions on the lower floors of the huge castlelike Buda Postal โPalaceโ on the northwest corner of Szell Kalman Square where they alongside an Arrowcross detachment made a determined stand.
