History

Formed in 1944, the Vannay Battalion was a Hungarian commando unit meant to defend Budapest from the advancing Soviet forces.

The batallion was made up of volunteers and played a significant role during the citys defense, enduring superior Soviet attacks during tough winter conditions for seven weeks, eventually taking positions on the lower floors of the huge castlelike Buda Postal โ€˜Palaceโ€™ on the northwest corner of Szell Kalman Square where they alongside an Arrowcross detachment made a determined stand.

The batallion was ultimately destroyed in the siege of Budapest
