By late 1944, German High Command was urgently seeking a mobile flame-throwing platform. The ideal behind the vehicle was the marriage of two distinct philosophies: the highly efficient, low-profile, sloped-armor chassis of the Jagdpanzer 38(t) "Hetzer," and the devastating close-range capabilities of the 1.4 cm Flammenwerfer 41.

The requirement was for a breakthrough vehicle (Durchbruchwagen) that could spearhead urban offensives and shatter defensive bottlenecks.
A common tactical issue with flame tanks was that their distinct, shortened nozzles made them immediate high-value targets for enemy anti-tank crews. To counter this, German engineers housed the flame projector inside a dummy metal shroud that perfectly mimicked the standard 7.5 cm Pak 39 anti-tank gun.

To the casual observer or an Allied scout, the vehicle looked exactly like a standard tank destroyer.
The standard main gun and its heavy ammunition racks were entirely removed.

In their place, engineers installed a massive 600-liter fuel tank filled with a volatile mixture of gasoline and thick oil. Utilizing a gas-pressurized pump system, the four-man crew could project up to 24 separate bursts of flame, or a continuous, roaring stream reaching up to 50 to 60 meters.

In November 1944, Adolf Hitler demanded an immediate increase in flame-throwing armor for the upcoming winter counter-offensives. The process was handled as a rapid factory conversion at the BMM plant in Prague.

Because each vehicle required extensive interior modification, the output was strictly limited. In December 1944, exactly 20 units were completed. While the standard Praga AC 6-cylinder petrol engine and chassis were reliable, the Reich simply lacked the time, raw materials, and factory security to produce these specialized weapons in meaningful numbers.

The Flammpanzer 38(t) was primarily assigned to two independent units: Flammpanzerkompanie 352 and Flammpanzerkompanie 353, elite fire companies used to lead major counter-attacks. Its combat debut occurred in January 1945 during Operation Nordwind, the German winter offensive in the Alsace-Lorraine region.

The Flammpanzer’s greatest strength was also its undoing. The vehicle was fundamentally limited by its weapon's range. Tasking a crew with driving an armored box filled with 600 liters of flammable fuel to within 60 meters of an enemy meant navigating a gauntlet of bazookas and anti-tank guns.
The logistical burden of the late war quickly took its toll.

In the fuel-starved landscape of 1945, many Flammpanzers were abandoned by their crews not because they were defeated in combat, but because they simply ran out of gasoline or suffered minor mechanical breakdowns that could not be repaired in the field. By February 1945, both companies were virtually wiped out, their remaining vehicles captured, destroyed, or left stranded by the side of the road.

The Flammpanzer 38(t) remains a compelling testament to the extremes of late-war German engineering. But wars are not fought in a vacuum. The Flammpanzer 38(t) was a magnificent failure—a weapon that arrived too late, in too few numbers, and with too dangerous an operational profile for the crumbling infrastructure of the Reich to sustain.
