Vehicle History
The Sturmgeschütz III Ausführung D (StuG III Ausf. D), designated Sd.Kfz. 142, was the immediate successor to the Ausf. C and represented a seamless continuation of the early short-barreled production run.
Manufactured by Alkett between May and September 1941, a total of 150 units were completed. Because it was produced back-to-back with the Ausf. C, the Ausf. D was visually and structurally almost identical to its predecessor, with many historical records grouping the two variants together due to their shared casemate redesign and technical standards.
The Ausf. D incorporated improved transmission maintenance hatches on the front hull and minor internal stowage modifications. The Ausf. D was notably the final variant of the early StuG III series to retain the original narrow hull casemate structure before the wider superstructure was introduced on the subsequent Ausf. E.
